CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Gov. Joe Manchin says his special session agenda is straightforward and lawmakers should be able to complete it in a day.
Manchin plans to call the Legislature back into session Tuesday night to deal with his two-item agenda - unemployment benefits and a $500 bonus for state employees.
The governor says lawmakers need to move quickly to extend unemployment benefits because 2,700 West Virginians have exhausted their benefits and another 4,000 will lose theirs in the near future.
Manchin says his proposal would extend benefits to at least December.
The governor also will ask lawmakers to approve a $500 bonus for state employees. He says the state can't afford to give pay raises, but a bonus is a way of thanking workers for efforts.
