CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The National Weather Service says a tornado touched down in northern Kanawha County Wednesday night, resulting in the strongest wind gust ever recorded at Yeager Airport.

The tornado touched down at Youngs Bottom, 3 miles northeast of Elkview, according to the NWS. It was 50 yards wide, its path was 300 yards long, and winds were estimated at 80 mph.

The twister was an EF0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. That measures tornadoes by their damage. According to the National Weather Service's website, an EF0 tornado results in light damage like: some damage to chimneys, branches broken off trees, shallow-rooted trees pushed over, sign boards damaged.

The storm moved through the Kanawha Valley about 6:30pm Wednesday -- knocking down power lines and trees.

The wind gust recorded at the airport was 84 mph -- the strongest ever recorded at that site.

911 dispatchers say the hardest hit area was Elk River area -- spanning from Pinch to Clendenin.

The National Weather Service was out in the region Thursday assessing the damage.

The previous fastest wind gust was 76 mph on July 26, 2007.

WV's tornado season runs Feb. 1-Nov 1, peak activity is April 1 - Sept. 1; most common during May. Thank God nobody was killed or hurt.
