GRAYSON, Ky. (WSAZ) - It was the first ever "Nick Nischan Day," and everyone hopes it will be the last.

April 4, 2008, was officially proclaimed "Nick Nischan Day" by city officials. Nick is a 12-year-old boy who has been fighting brain cancer since he was 7.

Friday's service at First Church of Christ in Grayson raised thousands of dollars for Nick's medical expenses.

Detroit Lions' wide receiver Mike Furrey flew from Michigan to be alongside Nick Friday. The two formed a bond when Nick and his family saw a Lions game in December.

"All my goals and dreams were all selfish and it brings a 12-year-old kid 6 months ago to make me realize that the awards and accolades and success are not the goal in life. The goal in life was to get to heaven and nick was on a better track than I was." Furrey said. "Here's a kid that's 12 years old and is more mature than the majority of the players in the NFL."

Nick continues treatment April 10, when he will get an MRI.

BIKERS: We're having a RIDE-IN to raise money for Nick on June 1st of this year in Eastern Virginia at Rappahannock Church of Christ. Annonymous donors are giving money for every motorcycle that shows up. Bike contest, door-prizes, great live music from one of our Harley Riders' bands . . . and every kind of bike will be there! Our club (The RCofC Bikers) has guys who ride everything from an antique HD, to softail classics, sportsters, Nightsters, every kind of Metric, even a BMW, Ducati and Big Dog! Best of all, Nick and his family will be there!!! So leave your wallet at home if you want to, but ride in! Just by showing up, Nick's family will be helped. Go to www.rcofc.org for more info.

Having lived in Grayson all of my life I naturally know most people there. I am blessed to know this wonderful Nischan family and continue to be blessed by Nick's faith as well as his family's. Living in Nashville we hear a great deal about Pacman Jones and Chris Henry and their 'trials.' It is refreshing to hear of an NFL player who knows the Lord and what is important in life. There are several TN Titans players and coaches who are Christians and are willing to share their faith in the community. We need more postive role models not only for our children but for this nation! Thank you WSAZ for sharing this story with your viewers. They have no idea what a special family the Nischans are and what a witness their faith continues to be to the Tri-State.
