BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins
is reinforcing his call for athletes to stay in school longer
following allegations that former Southern Cal basketball star O.J.
Mayo received thousands of dollars in improper gifts.
Huggins says the longer students stay in school, the better it
is for them. He's been a proponent of a minimum of two years for
basketball players. He says the thought of sending his two
daughters into the world without setting foot on a college campus
is scary.
ESPN reported Sunday that Mayo allegedly received thousands of
dollars in gifts from money given to an event promoter by Bill
Duffy Associates. Mayo, who attended Huntington High last year,
declared for the NBA draft after the season and signed with the
agency.
