As I look back on this article I'm still amazed that a couple of the Huntington High players received no recognition at all. I attended an ASA tournament this past weekend and saw one particular HHS player in action. The manner in which she played was no different than how I saw her play in the high school season. She gives everything she has on every play and she's a pleasant kid to be around. I hope the coaches and sports writers take notice next season and reward this talented athlete for what she does on the field.

Thirty-three players from Kanawha County and northward in the state received all-state recognition. I would love to see someone do an article on this process to include: How are the players nominated? How many players can each coach nominate from his/her team? How many players from each team can be named to the all-state team? Can the writers or other coaches nominate players that the head coach doesn't nominate? I ask these questions because I've been told the coach can nominate only five players. Wheeling Park has six players who received all-state recognition in one form or another. How can that be? Huntington High had seven player who were deserving of all-state recognition and four made it. Something isn't right about this process and it's time questions were asked and answered. As I read in another paper, I do believe "back room" discussions occur in such matters and I further believe that some players receive recognition because of what they did in previous seasons.

Well said Mike.

I agree with Coach. I would take Huntington's centerfielder over every outfielder in the state. She's the ultimate team player. In every sport there are always players who are going to be overlooked when it comes time for recognition. In the same respect, there are players who are going to be named to all-tournament, all-conference, and all-state teams without playing to the level necessary for such recognition. Many times players are recognized for what they've done in the past. Is that right? Of course not, but..... HHS was a very talented team and by being such some of the girls were penalized due to the numbers game. Two particular players were instrumental to the team's success, but for whatever reason they were not individually recognized for they did on the field. What they did, however, was help lead the Lady Highlanders to a second straight state championship. Everyone knows who they are and they can hold their heads high. Their parents should be extremely proud of them.

Congratulations to all of the all state players. Huntington had considerable talent that went unrecognized, but that is left up to the sportswriters. The coaches only nominate a few of Huntingtons players were left off. How can your senior captain who has signed with Marshall, not get anything( she deserved 1st team, there are not 3 better outfielders in the state). 2 time defending champ with 2 1st teamers and 1 second team player, while others that did not even compete for a championship got more?

i heard the stinson girl my be facing theft charges, and marshall already pulled her scholarship. its sad that someone can have so much going for them and then make a stupid decision to steal purses and loose everything that she and her family has worked so hard for.

First of all, congratulations to the players throughout the state who were recognized for all-state. Secondly, the system that is used to select the teams is in need of repair. For example, coaches are limited to nominating five of their players for all-state consideration. How is that fair? Huntington High was loaded throughout the lineup. To start with, somewhere along the way Sam Spurlock, HHS center fielder was left out of the mix entirely. As for limiting nominations, Tressa Riley and Ashley Byrd from Huntington received no recogniton either even though they put up impressive numbers both offensively and defensively. Limiting the coaches to five players does one thing-it gives priority for nomination to seniors. The AAA all-state team was dominated by players from the northern part of the state. Not to take anything away from those players, but they don't play to the level that the MSAC teams do. Just look at how Robert C. Byrd and East Fairmont fared in the state tournament.
