HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Long time Marshall University sports medicine doctor and well-known local physician Dr. Jose Ricard has died.

His daughter, Jackie Ricard, tells WSAZ that he died at about 8am Saturday at his home.

He's worked with Marshall University athletics since 1982. He was an Associate Professor of Family Practice at the Marshall School of Medicine.

Dr. Ricard was always there on the sidelines for Marshall games and is very well known in the community. He is responsible for starting the sports medicine program at Marshall.

Dr. Ricard was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame. He was honored as the recipient of the Family Doc Award by his peers and a $50,000 scholarship was created in his honor for the Marshall School of Medicine.

Ricard was 81 years old.

Those that knew Dr. Jose Ricard know that we have lost a fine Doctor, Gentleman and humorist. Ill always remember The Herds away games, when Doc. and I would set in the lobby of the hotels that we staying waiting for the Herd to board the bus for the stadium and we would discuss everything from poison ivy to migraine headaches. My wife Retha was also associated with Doc during his early practice here in the states. Retha and I wish only the best for Amy and family.

I just wanted to say thanks to "DOC" who saw me thru marriages, divorce and a healthy pregnancy and delivery. I will have great memories to tell my son of the DOC who loved MU and who took great care of me with love and respect. I am glad that I grew up next door to you. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to become great friends with your daughter. You will be missed!!

Dr. Ricard was such a gentle and kind doctor. It was an honor to have worked with him while I was at Marshall. He will truly be missed. He had a remarkable story of how he came to America and was a true American. My prayers are with the family.

First of all, I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to the Ricard family. Dr. Ricard was an amazing man. I had the opportunity and privilege to be one of his athletes at Marshall. I was never greeted without a smile and true concern over how I was doing. I'll never forget him being on our field wearing his Marshall fisherman's hat and cheering as loud as he could. He had an overwhelming love of family, sports, and medicine. Dr. Ricard was, in his own words when you asked what it was he was giving you to take, "good stuff that makes you feel better". This is a true loss for the Marshall community. He will be loved and missed for years to come.

I had the chance to work with Dr.Ricard and he is an amazing Doctor. Dr.Ricard gave great dedication and support to all staff at UP&S and MU players. His time was his patients, the athletes and his beloved family. God Bless you Dr.Ricard and your family. Rest in peace

I agree what a sad day for the medical community and all of Huntington. Dr Ricard has been my doctor for over 34 years. He was a kind and gentle person. He always knew what to say and how to say it. Doc... You are our special friend and we will miss you. May God be with your famiy at this time and always. As Dr Ricard would always say "Go Herd". We will remember you always

This is indeed a sad day! Dr. Ricard took care of my family for MANY years. Away from the office, he always had a kind word to say and a smile on his face. He was a true gentleman and a credit to the university, the community, and his profession. My one regret is that I was never able to connect with him to have him share his incredible life story with my Spanish students. May he rest in peace!

He was a well respected man. He treated everyone in my family for over 30 years. He will be greatly missed. His family is in my prayers.

I am an employee at Cabell. I have always heard nothing but good things about Dr. Ricard. Huntington has lost a great doctor. May he rest in peace. Prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.
