MEMPHIS, TN (WSAZ) -- In the ornate lobby of The Peabody Hotel, Conference USA's best football players took center stage, making Peabody's famous walking ducks the secondary story in Memphis.

Coaches and players gathered for the annual CUSA Blitz.

There was the steady diet of questions from reporters about who the best teams in the league are, with the knowledge that it's all an educated guess until the last Saturday in August.

Marshall was represented by Coach Mark Snyder, Tight End Cody Slate and safety C.J. Spillman.

"I'm very excited," Herd Coach Mark Snyder said. "I think the league's wide open, there's no dominant team out there."

Of course the most repetitive query the Herd contingent got from the media was, "who's your quarterback going to be?."

"I think Mark's (freshman Mark Cann) the front runner going through spring," Slate said. "I think it's still wide open though."

Marshall was picked to finish fifth in the East Division of Conference USA, ahead of only UAB.

Mark Snyder stopped short of saying he'd use that as motivation for his team. But he did say "we might be the dark horse this year."

you have to be kidding me marshall joing a bigger conference is not the problem before coach snyder came here the talent and depth was getting pretty thin. and how many years has wvu been the bottom and kicked around in there conference everything trends and marshall will come back around will wvu stay on top for good i don't think so!!

I went to WVU and graduated from there...and I probably donate more money to the university than you make in a year! Coach Stew has never said he wants the job indefinitely...I look for Doc Holliday to take the job in a few years...Marshall's football program is out of place....it should be back in the MAC...Conference USA was and is too much for them....go back to what your familiar with, regional schools so your small fan base can travel to your games

To all of those blundering herd fans out there who are drinking bad water or breathing bad air think that the stumbling, fumbling herd will beat THE MIGHTY MOUNTAINEERS in TOUCHDOWN CITY, you had better get used to another losing season!

Way I see it, WVU fans only have this coming year to talk trash. After that, goodbye!! After Pat White leaves, you'll have nothing. You're coach is a dud. So put all those ugly blue and gold sweatshirts back in the closet for another 20 years. Like you did after the Notre Dame loss in '89? 88? Whenever that butt-kicking took place. I love how WVU fans come crawling out of the hollars when the team starts doing good. How many of you WVU fans actually went to WVU? How many of you donate money to WVU? none of you? I thought so. Shut up and go cheer for your old high school. Go relive your glory days. You obviously know nothing about college football.....

yeah pruett really left him a lot to work with. probation mainly. let him get recruits in and see what they can do.

more like a "dead mule"

Posted by: Matt on Jul 21, 2008 at 05:16 PM
Coach Snyder needs to step it up. Marshall Football has been a joke since Coach Pruett left. They continue to weaken every opponent's strength of schedule each season. Please get your act together Coach.

If they're a "dark horse" it's because of the coordinators who were brought in and not because of anything the HC has done or will do.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 21, 2008 at 04:44 PM
dark horse? marshall is a joke and so is conference usa. their motto is "we play for championships" they were MAC championships. what a joke.

Come on, root for our Herd! Win or lose it's my alma mater and I'll always be behind them! You go Coach!

Marshall a dark horse? Will be lucky to win 3 games this year

Posted by: osu buckeye on Jul 21, 2008 at 12:05 PM
Yeah, sure...

Posted by: Daryl on Jul 21, 2008 at 11:54 AM
I agree with coach snyder there is no dominant team in c-usa, especially marshall! LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!

Posted by: Gonzo on Jul 21, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Yeah, Season is wide open, to get your butt kicked again..Snyder is a good guy up highly inexperienced to run an all football school like Marshall..If he doesn't get the guys lined out this year..he should probably start posting resume's...
