BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ)—A soccer invasion is headed to Cabell County.

Local and state leaders released more details today about the US Youth Soccer Region 1 Championships that will take place the next 2 summers at Barboursville Park.

Some 280 boys and girls soccer teams from 13 states will be competing in the tournament that will take place from July 2-7 next year. Including players and spectators, some 10,000 people are expected to watch and take part in the tournament.

More than 3000 hotel and motel rooms have already been booked for the tournament that is expected to have a $12 million impact on the local economy next summer.

Marshall University will host the opening ceremony, as well as provide some 750 dorm rooms for participants.

The ceremonies at Joan C Edwards Stadium will feature a parade of states.

Games will be played on some 22 soccer fields at Barboursville Park and the YMCA Kennedy Center. Many of those fields are currently under construction.

Champions in the Under-14 though Under-19 brackets will earn a berth in the US Youth Soccer National Championships.

The tournament will be played July 1-6 in 2010.

This, while being good for the local economy, is a curse upon the wilderness of West Virginia. I live within a mile of the fields under construction. The crews demolished virgin forests and burned them on the fields. Some of the state's prime biking trails were destroyed. Barboursville Park hosts the final race on the West Virginia Mountain Biking Association's circuit. Did the politicians think of this? No, they thought about lining their own poockets, in this scheme to make money. As the forests burned in the construction of these fields, a smog hung over the Guyandotte Valley for weeks...
