BEIJING (WSAZ) -- Michael Phelps re-wrote the history books Sunday in Beijing with his record 8th gold medal.

Phelps swam the third butterfly leg in the 400 meter medley relay and handed his teammate Jason Lezak a lead.

Lezak, swimming anchor, finished the job, helping Phelps break the fabled record of having the most gold medals ever in a single Olympics. It was previously held by American Mark Spitz, who won 7 gold medals in the 1972 Munich Games.

Thirty-six years later, Phelps and his American teammates finished in record time.

My point is that parents, especially in this area, are lacking the skills and interest to teach and inspire their own kids. They rely on the Michael Jordans and Hannah Montanas of the world to do their job... My mother is a fifth grade teacher here and had to by a digital clock because the majority of her students couldn't read the minute and hour hands on a standard school clock. The issue isn't with the kids or the teachers... It's the parents. Read your kids a book... take them outside.. limit their brainwashing television time. Take an interest in their daily activities.. Be a parent!!

Dang Jay. A little jealous? I may be wrong, but I don't think Michael Phelps sells drugs in his offseason. I don't he has an off-season. I don't he steals from his workplace either. He's a swimmer. Is he going to steal the water? He may beat his girlfriend, but I doubt it. It's not really the athlete, it's the dedication and hard work that makes him a role model. If kids would work as half as hard he does, imagine the possiblities... I respect the guy.

I think it is absolutely disgusting how much emphasis is put on athletes. Today's so called "role models" are just people who can run, jump, or (in this case) swim faster and better than the average joe. Not to say Mr. Phelps accomplishments aren't impressive, but how do you know this guy is a role model? He could deal drugs on his off season, beat his girlfriend, steal from his workplace. Just because he won a gold medal, he is automatically an inspiration to our youth. The same goes for actors and actresses... Stop idolizing these people. They are just like us except they are found in that small box in your living room that raises your children because you are too lazy to care. Wake up. Take responsibility and start parenting and, for God's sake, trying being a "role model" yourself.

He is an outstanding athlete and an inspiration for kids everywhere. He did a phenomenal job in Beijing and we couldn't be prouder. Young Mr. Phelps is a superb role model and I am still in amazement by his accomplishments during these Olympics. We had such fantastic talent on our men's and women's teams, respectively. We're still cheering out loud for them! What a proud moment and I can honestly say that history was witnessed last night. Great job to Michael and all our swimmers.

I never gave the sport of swimming a second thought until I saw this young man in action, and then I was hooked! It became a ritual for me to watch each event that Michael Phelps competed in, and as the medal count got higher I knew that I may be bearing witness to history in the making. Not since 1972 and quite possibly never again could we witness what would be a first in the 112 year history of the Olympics. The only thing that I would have done differently by the Olympic Commitee would be for none other than Mark Spitz himself placing the #8 medal around Phelp's neck. Noone had ever had any real expectations of seeing the 36 year old - seven gold medal record by Mark Spitz ever matched much less broken with a clean sweep of eight, but now there's a new kid in town who stands high upon the mountain while holding an olympic record that will most likely still be in tact 36 years from now and could very likely never be broken. Unless of course Michael Phelps breaks it himself.

I usually do not follow the olympic games but I became fascinated by this young man early on. What an amazing and talented individual. As an american, I am very proud of Mr Phelps. What a great role model for the youth of this world.

I THINK MICHAEL IS GREAT AT WHAT HE DOES AND HE DESERVES EVERY GOLD METAL HE CAN GET. WHAT MAKES HIM GREAT IS HIS MOTHER IN THE STANDS. YOU CAN REALLY TELL SHE LOVES HER SON BEYOND ANYTHING JUST TO SEE HER IN THE STANDS AND HOW HAPPY SHE IS WHEN HE WINS. YOU CAN TELL SHE IS REALLY TIRED BUT SHE IS STILL THERE RIGHT BY HIS SIDE,THAT IS WHAT GOOD PARENTS AND GREAT LOVE IS ALL ABOUT. I HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING MICHAEL AND THE OTHER USA TEAM MEMBERS IN THIS OLYMPICS. HATS OFF TO ALL OF THE MEMBERS, THEY HAVE ALL WORKED HARD.
