CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Bluefield and Wheeling Central begin their 2008 football seasons where they left off last year - at the top of the rankings in their respective classes.

According to West Virginia sports writers participating in the preseason Charleston Daily Mail poll, University is the team to beat in Class Triple-A.

Class Double-A Bluefield and Class Single-A Wheeling Central will be defending state championships both won last December.

Wheeling Central was the unanimous number one selection among the 20 sports writers participating in this year's poll.

Following Wheeling Central in Class Single-A were Williamstown, Fayetteville, Madonna, St. Marys, Moorefield, Buffalo, Gilbert, Wahama and Matewan.

In Class Double-A, Bluefield received 11 first-place votes, followed by Wayne, James Monroe, Magnolia, Keyser, Grafton, Poca, Wyoming East, Tyler Consolidated and Berkeley Springs.

University begins the season Friday with seven first-place votes. University was followed in Class Triple-A by St. Albans, Parkersburg, Martinsburg, George Washington, Capital, Morgantown, Hurricane, Cabell Midland and Bridgeport.

What I want to know is why Lincoln County never gets mention unless something illegal is going on there. I mean, what do we have to do to get some recognition? Our football team has a better record than Huntington High, yet all we hear about is the Huntington High team and their quarterback. Our team has already achieved many historic feats in the past 2 weeks , winning their first triple A game, first ever winning streak, 2 wins in a roll on the road, and first winning season. Not to mention they have done all of coming off of a 1(W) 20(L) record over the past 2 years. But did we hear any of that? No, because apparentley everyone else would rather hear about the teams surrounding us, especially the ones that are losing.

To Courtney: James Monroe is obviously way down this year.A new coach and new offense gave the Wayners a chance this year. But Wayne stills plays a cupcake schedule overall.

TO TERRY: still think wayne plays a cupcake schedule? they DEFINITELY deserve to be ranked above james monore considering they "MANHANDLED" then last night in a 31 to 10 KILLING.

Posted by: rebel on Sep 6, 2008 at 12:15 AM

To Anonymous - Do you nto understand these rankings are just opinions?I was at that game.It was no fluke.James Monroe manhandled Wayne from the opening kickoff.Only strengthens the argument that Wayne plays a cupcake schedule.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 2, 2008 at 09:24 PM
WAYNE IS STILL RANKED #2 AFTER BEING DEFEATED BY JAMES MONROE LAST SEASON IN THE SEMI-FINALS, AND STILL YET WAYNE IS RANKED ABOVE JAMES MONROE...ONLY STRENGHENING THE ARGUEMENT OF A "FLUKE" WIN BY THE MAVERICKS. I CANT WAIT TO WATCH SENIORS (QB) JOEY FERGUSON AND (LB) DUSTIN SHREVE PLAY THIS SEASON! GO PIONEERS!!
