LEXINGTON, KY (WSAZ)--The West Virginia Power took the final game of the series against the Lexington Legends Tuesday night with a 7-3 victory, lowering the magic number to three to clinch the Northern Division's 2nd half crown.
West Virginia now has a 3.5 game lead on the second place Lakewood BlueClaws.
The Legends struck first in the fourth inning on Brian Pellegrini’s RBI ground out.
The lead didn’t last long, as the Power scored three times during the next half inning to take the lead for good. Zelous Wheeler began the inning with a base hit and scored on Curt Rindal’s double. Eric Farris then hit a two-run homer with two outs to put the Power up 3-1.
Eric Fryer walked to start the sixth inning. Caleb Gindl doubled in Fryer and Wheeler knocked in the next two runs with a single.
The Power scored one final time on Farris’s run scoring single in the eighth inning.
The Legends scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Bryan Brown singled in the first run and Steve Brown scored on Craig Corrado’s ground out.
Evan Anundsen (12-7) allowed just an unearned run on one hit over seven innings to earn the victory. Anthony Bello (7-7) was tagged with the loss.
The Power improved to 75-59 on the year and 43-22 in the second half with the win. The Legends fell to 43-90 on the year and 22-42 in the second half with the loss.
The Power are off on Wednesday, but will begin a five game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators to finish the regular season at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night.
