- The Secondary School Activities
Commission wants the state Supreme Court to reinstate two
administrative rules struck down last year.
A lower court overturned the rules in a case involving former
Huntington High basketball star O.J. Mayo.
One automatically imposed multi-game suspensions on players who
are ejected. The other allowed the SSAC to force teams with
ineligible players to forfeit victories, even if the players win
their cases on appeal.
SSAC lawyer Bill Wooton said Tuesday the forfeiture rule was
actually a moot point in the Mayo case, since Huntington never
forfeited any games.
Mayo was suspended after his ejection from a game in 2007. His
attorney, Mike Woelfel, says athletes must be allowed to have their
say before punishment is invoked.
