Houston, Texas (MU SID) - Marshall running back Darius Marshall ran for 118 yards to pass 1000 for the season, but it wasn't enough as the Herd was unable to contain the Owls potent passing attack in a 35-10 loss Saturday at Rice Stadium.

Offensively, Marshall was led once again by Darius Marshall who became the 13th player in school history to rush for 1000 yards in a single season. Mark Cann completed 13-of-24 passes for 83 yards. Tight end Cody Slate caught Slate made 7 receptions for 37 yards and had the Herd's loan touchdown.

Defensively, Maurice Kitchens recorded his fourth interception of the season and T.J. Drakeford forced and recovered a fumble.

Rice quarterback Chase Clement passed for 315 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another. Clement's primary target was Jarrett Dillard who had six catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Corbin Smiter had four receptions for 120 yards and one score. Clement also had 53 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Clement chalked up the first touchdown of the game with his feet, rushing for a 12-yard score around the right end to put the Owls ahead 7-0 with 11:42 remaining in the first quarter.

On its next possession Rice downed a punt at the Marshall one-yard line, setting up an epic 18-play 99-yard scoring drive for the Thundering Herd. Marshall kept the ball on the ground for 15 of 18 plays, and Cann capped the scoring march with a nine-yard strike to Cody Slate to tie the game.

The teams traded possessions for the rest of the half as Marshall was unable to take advantage of a successful fake punt by Kase Whitehead and Maurice Kitchens recorded his team-leading fourth interception of the season to end the Owls' last drive.

The Rice offense came alive in the second half. The Owls retook the lead quickly in third quarter, moving 77-yards in just over two minutes as Clement found Dillard for a 27-yard touchdown over the middle. Clement then found Toren Dixon for a five yard touchdown with 5:54 remaining in the quarter to give Rice a two score lead.

Marshall was able to move the ball deep into Owl territory on its next possession and tacked on three points as Craig Ratanamorn booted a 36-yard field goal.

Clement once again stepped in to kill the Herd's momentum as he hit Smiter down the sideline on a 44-yard bomb to move the score to 28-10. The Owl gunslinger capped off his performance with his fourth touchdown pass night and second to Dillard.

Game Notes
Marshall running back Darius Marshall became the 13th player in Marshall history to rush for 1000 yards in a single season. D. Marshall now has 1003 yards on 206 carries to lead the Herd in both categories.

Rice won the coin toss and chose to differ. Marshall received the ball.

Mark Cann capped an 18-play, 99-yard drive with a nine-yard scoring pass to Cody Slate. The 99-yard drive was the longest dive of the season for the Herd. Marshall's previous long for the season was an 88-yard drive against Illinois State, which consisted of just one play.

Cody Slate finished the game with 37 yards on 7 receptions and one touchdown. It was the sixth consecutive game in which the junior tight end has recorded a touchdown.

Maurice Kitchens recorded his fourth interception of the season. He leads the team in interceptions this season.

Sick and tired of being sick!! Another fine performance!! I have defended coach Snyder to friends many times however I must even say enough is enough. Tired of hearing Cann is just a freshman he is a redshirt freshman (2nd yr) & it's not mistakes that he makes like throwing into double coverage etc. It's that he locks in on one reciever & does not make his reads through progression and he misses throws by overthrowing or underthrowing constantly (looks horrible). He may be the quaterback of the future & turn out to be good however with having to win the last 2 games to qualify for a bowl & Cann struggling you would think the coach would want to try someone else in second half couldn't have been worse. Are you kiding me 80 some yards passing in last 2 games. All I hear is the other quarterbacks aren't that good I don't think it would have hurt to at least tried what's the worst that could have happened lose the game. Well we lost anyways. Tired of hearing wait till next year.
