The first Friends of Coal Bowl belongs to the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Pat White threw two touchdown passes and Steve Slaton ran for
two more scores to lead the fifth-ranked Mountaineers past Marshall
42-to-10 today in Morgantown.

Slaton and White helped form the nation's fourth-best rushing
attack last season, and the sophomores tore up Marshall in the
second meeting since 1923 between the state's two Division One
schools.

Slaton ran for 140 of his 203 yards in the first half and scored
on runs of 14 and 16 yards. White found Brandon Myles with first-half T-D tosses of eight and 18 yards.

West Virginia scored on four of its first five possessions and
led 28-to-7 at halftime.

Marshall's Matt Morris made up for a dropped pass in the end
zone earlier in the game by grabbing a 21-yard scoring toss from
Bernie Morris in the second quarter. The pass initially was ruled incomplete but Marshall challenged and the play was overturned for a touchdown.

West Virginia fullback Owen Schmitt scored on a three-yard run
midway through the third quarter. Backup quarterback Jarrett Brown
added a seven-yard scoring run late in the game.
