BELGRADE, Serbia - Marshall University senior Chantelle Handy, a native of Durham, England, will represent Great Britain at the 2009 World University Games, a 16-team Olympic-style event for college-age basketball players, from July 1-12.
For Handy, this will mark her third season as a member of the team and first as team captain. Thus far, she has led the team to a 1-1 record. In the opening round, Handy led Great Britain to a 76-67 upset win over host Serbia, scoring 12 points.
In the second round, her team drew a United States team, who defeated France, 115-30, in its opening round game. Handy scored ten, but it was not enough as the U.S. came away with a 93-59 victory.
"We played well. We came out of the second half a lot better than the first and did better than expected. We just went in knowing we had to win possession and had to improve from the last game," Handy said following the game against the U.S.
Handy and her team will look to improve to 2-1 in the games when they take on France on Friday evening.
The 2009 World University Games mark the first time that a team from Great Britain has competed in the event. The team is dominated with players who play at U.S. colleges along with three UK-based students.
The World University Games are held every other year and are organized by the International University Sports Federation.
