Ted Scott sank two free throws with 16 seconds left to lift West Virginia State to an 80-to-79 win over top-seeded Alderson-Broaddus tonight for the Yellowjackets' second straight conference tournament championship.
Number three-seeded West Virginia State earned an automatic
berth in the Division Two East Regional.
Top-seeded Alderson-Broaddus lost to an in-state opponent for
the first time this season.
Scott finished with 29 points, but it didn't appear he would
even make it through this game. He picked up three fouls and played
just eleven minutes in the first half.
State led 43-to-42 at halftime and the lead changed seven times
in the first eight minutes of the second half.
The Battlers' Stan Hall scored 15 of his 25 points in an
eight-minute span that put Alderson-Broaddus ahead 75-to-69 with
But the Battlers didn't make a field goal the rest of the game.
Terrell Eargle made four straight free throws to give
Alderson-Broaddus a 79-to-78 lead with 1:20 left.
With time winding down, Scott drove the lane, was fouled by
Eargle and made two free throws for the final margin
State's Tony Cornett finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds and
Eargle had 14 points and eleven rebounds.
