MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Marshall survived an anemic second half to
defeat U-A-B 53-to-52 tonight in the opening round of the
Conference U-S-A Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee.
Markel Humphrey hit a layup in the final seconds to give
Marshall the victory.
The Thundering Herd will face top-seeded Memphis in the second
round tomorrow.
Mark Dorris led Marshall with 15 points. Humphrey added 12
points.
Lawrence Kinnard led ninth-seeded U-A-B with 17 points and nine
rebounds. Paul Delaney added 10 points and six assists.
Marshall led by 14 at the half. But the Thundering Herd stumbled
in the second half, committing 13 turnovers and connecting on only
five of their 20 shots.
U-A-B scored nine unanswered points and took a 52-to-51 lead
with 28-point-eight seconds left. But the Blazers' comeback fell
short as Delaney's 12-foot bank shot bounced off the rim as time
expired.
