Charleston Catholic won its first girls state Class Single-A basketball title since 1979 with a 51-to-38 win over two-time defending champion Parkersburg Catholic Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center.
Charleston Catholic avenged last year's one-point title loss to
Parkersburg Catholic and denied the Crusaders their record tenth
title.
Charleston Catholic never trailed, hitting six of its first
seven shots and scoring the first 14 points of the game.
Parkersburg Catholic cut the deficit to 25-to-19 at halftime and
to 34-to-31 at the end of the third quarter. But Charleston
Catholic went on a 9-nothing run to start the fourth and take away
any chance of a Crusader comeback.
For Charleston Catholic, Mackenzie Maier scored 20 points and
had seven blocked shots. Alex Smith added ten points.
Teresa Tokodi led Parkersburg Catholic with 17 points but she
made only 4-of-16 shot attempts.
