Huntington put an exclamation on one of the finest seasons in state history with a 103-to-61 win over South Charleston for the Class Triple-A championship tonight at the Charleston Civic Center.
For the top-seeded Highlanders, O-J Mayo had 41 points, ten
rebounds and eleven assists as the Highlanders earned an
unprecedented third straight Triple-A title.
It was the highest point total for a Triple-A champion since
Logan scored 111 points against Washington Irving in 1977.
All of Huntington's starters scored in double figures. Michael
Taylor had 19, Jamaal Williams had 15, Patrick Patterson had 14
points and seven blocked shots, and Bruce Senior scored 12.
Huntington beat South Charleston by 19 points during the regular
season, but the Highlanders were already ahead by that much after
Mayo scored eleven points in a three-minute span of the second
quarter.
The lead grew to as much as 42-to-19 just before halftime.
In his final moments with a minute left in the game, Mayo threw
the ball off the backboard from the free-throw line, caught it in
midair and dunked. He then threw the ball deep into the stands and
held up three fingers.
Frankie Mullens led second-seeded South Charleston with 20
points.
