West Virginia 71, N.C. State 66
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia beat North Carolina State
71-to-66 tonight to advance to the semifinals of the National
Invitation Tournament for the first time since 1981.
Frank Young scored 25 points, including 14 straight in the
second half, to lead West Virginia. Young set the single-season
school record with his first three-pointer, then buried five more.
Young has 107 three-pointers for the year, eclipsing the 101 by
Chris Leonard in 1992.
N-C State had won five of its last six games, but couldn't
contain Young. He hit consecutive three-pointers to give West
Virginia a 64-to-62 advantage with 2:52 left.
Alex Ruoff followed with another three-pointer as the
Mountaineers grabbed the edge for good at 67-to-65 with 2:00 left.
The lead changed hands 13 times and there were six ties.
Ruoff finished with 15 points and had a career-high 11 assists.
N-C State was led by Brandon Costner with 25 points. Engin Astur
added 14 and Gavin Grant scored 12.
West Virginia plays South Region top seed Mississippi State in
the semifinals on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York.
