Tubby Smith is departing Kentucky for Minnesota. An official at the University of Minnesota says that Smith has been tagged to be the new men's basketball coach, replacing the fired Dan Monson.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official announcment hasn't been made.
The Wildcats went 22-and-12 under Smith this season and made it to the N-C-A-A tournament, but lost the first weekend.
Kentucky hasn't been to the Final Four since 1998, and the program has lost ten or more games in a season five times under Smith -- more than any other coach.
Smith will take over a Minnesota program that struggled for years under Monson, who was hired to rehabilitate the Gophers program after an academic scandal under former coach Clem Haskins. Monson cleaned up the program, but the Gophers didn't win.
Minnesota has announced a news conference tomorrow to introduce its new coach, but the school did not name him.
Smith met with the Kentucky players earlier today.
That comes from Kentucky basketball spokesman Scott Stricklin, who says he didn't know what Smith told the players and had no further comment.
