West Virginia 63 Mississippi State 62
NEW YORK (AP) - Darris Nichols drained a buzzer-beating
three-pointer to give West Virginia a 63-to-62 win over Mississippi
State in the N-I-T semifinals at Madison Square Garden.
The Mountaineers erased a 14-point deficit in the second half
and went ahead 60-to-59 when Jamie Smalligan hit two free throws
with 53 seconds left. Barry Stewart put the Bulldogs back on top
just nine seconds later before Nichols sent W-V-U into the N-I-T
final for the first time in 65 years.
Nichols finished with 17 points and Frank Young added 16 for the
Mountaineers, who had lost their previous three trips to the N-I-T
Dietric Slater scored a team-high 18 points for Mississippi
State, which ends the season 21-and-14.
