Marshall Hires Donnie Jones as Basketball Coach


The Thundering Herd has a new men's basketball coach. Marshall President Stephen Kopp announced Donnie Jones will fill the vacancy at a news conference Saturday monrning.

WSAZ Sports Director Keith Morehouse broke the story Friday afternoon.

Jones has been connected with Florida coach Billy Donovan for the past thirteen years. He is a native of Point Pleasant. Jones also went to Pikeville College and coached under Greg White.

Wednesday, Donovan was in Huntington for a Big Green event only hours after his Florida Gators won the NCAA men's basketball championship. Donovan announced his endorsement of Jones that night in a speech and meeting with members of the media.

No details of the contract are available yet. Marshall also interviewed Tennessee assistant coach Tony Jones.

Jones replaces Ron Jirsa as the coach at Marshall. The Herd fired Jirsa after going 43-74 in four seasons.
