BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Seth Ritchie scored two goals to lead
Charleston Catholic to a 4-2 win over Weir on Saturday, giving the
Irish a sweep of the Class AA-A state soccer championships.
Charleston Catholic's girls beat Weir 3-0 earlier Saturday at
the YMCA Youth Sports Complex in Beckley.
Ritchie scored in the 16th and 49th minutes. Tommy Trupo and
Alex Higgins scored the other goals for the Irish (22-1-1), who
trailed 2-1 at halftime.
Weir (14-4-2) got its first goal when a Charleston Catholic
player knocked the ball into his own net in the 28th minute. Weir's
Stephen Felton scored in the 39th minute.
BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Charleston Catholic allowed just one shot
on goal and beat Weir 3-0 on Saturday in the girls Class AA-A state
soccer championship game at the YMCA Youth Sports Complex in
Charleston Catholic outlasted Weir for the second straight year
in the title game.
Emily Blake, Donovan Reed and Victoria Thomas scored goals for
the Irish (20-1-4). Rachel Silverman had two assists and Blake had
Weir finished 16-4-4.
BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - George Capel and Brian Runyon scored goals
to lead defending champion Parkersburg to a 2-0 win over Woodrow
Wilson for the boys Class AAA soccer title Saturday.
Parkersburg (21-2-2), which beat Martinsburg 2-0 in the
semifinals, won its sixth state title under coach Don Fosselman.
Parkersburg avenged a 2-1 loss in the regular season to Woodrow
Capel, who also had a goal in last year's title win, scored in
the 29th minute and Runyon added a goal in the 71st minute.
Parkersburg goalkeeper Spencer Griffey posted the shutout.
BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Kaylynn Petrisin's goal in the 62nd minute
held up and unbeaten University beat Hurricane 1-0 on Saturday in
the girls state Class AAA soccer championship game.
University had lost in last year's title game to Nitro at the
YMCA Youth Sports Complex in Beckley.
Neither team managed much offense. Hurricane, which had beaten
Jefferson 1-0 in the semifinals, had three shots on goal and
University, a 1-0 semifinal winner over George Washington, had two.
Goalkeeper Hillary Dewitt earned the shutout for University
(23-0-2). Hurricane (16-1-5) lost its first game of the season.
