John Beilein, who left the West Virginia men's basketball team two weeks ago for Michigan, has been named the state college coach of the year.

The West Virginia Sports Writers Association announced today
that Beilein is the recipient of the Furfari (fur-FAIR-ee) Award.

Beilein will be honored at the 61st annual Victory Awards Dinner
on May Sixth in Parkersburg. While he will be unable to attend,
he's sending a videotape of his acceptance speech from Michigan.

Beilein guided the Mountaineers to the National Invitation
Tournament title. Less than a week later he was named coach at
Michigan.

It's the second time Beilein has won the award. He was honored
after taking the 2004-2005 team to the N-C-A-A tournament's Elite
Eight.

W-V-U football coach Rich Rodriguez, last year's winner, was
runner-up in the writers' balloting this year.
