One of the Class A semi-finals looked more like a football score as the Van Bulldogs beat Charleston Catholic 17-3.
Matt Sloan hit a solo homer and drove in four runs as Van
pounded out 13 hits off four Charleston Catholic pitchers.
Teammate Cory Castle had three R-B-I's and pitcher Jason Hoosier
scattered two hits in five innings to improve to ten-and-three this
Van scored two runs each in the first and second innings,
another in the third and three more in the fourth to jump ahead
eight-nothing. Sloan homered during a two-run fifth and Van capped
the scoring with seven runs in the sixth.
Charleston Catholic lost in the semifinals for the third
Van hasn't won a state title since capturing three in a row from
1991 to 1993.
Wheeling Central will go for its second Class Single-A baseball championship in three years after beating East Hardy 6-to-2 today in the semifinals at Charleston's Appalachian Power Park.
The Maroon Knights will play tomorrow afternoon against Van.
