Marshall's super sophomore Cody Slate has already been getting preseason publicity. The Herd's leading receiver last season has been named to the Mackey list as one of the premier tight ends in the nation.
Slate had 43 receptions for 685 yards and six touchdowns in 2005. Slate’s receiving totals ranked first among all tight ends and all freshmen regardless of position in Conference USA last season. He is the first freshman to lead Marshall in receiving since Randy Moss did so in 1996.
The Mackey award is named for John Mackey, a Hall of Fame tight end for the Baltimore Colts.
