Canes name their staring QB

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Miami's first-year coach, Randy
Shannon, says Kirby Freeman will be his starting quarterback for
the upcoming season opener.
Freeman beat out former starter Kyle Wright in the Hurricanes'
most-scrutinized training camp competition.
Freeman went 2-and-2 as the starter last season after Wright
broke his right thumb. He threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns to
take MVP honors in the Hurricanes' 21-20 win over Nevada in the MPC
Computers Bowl. He spent 21 games as Wright's backup over the
previous one and a-half.
Miami is unranked in the preseason poll for the first time since
1998 ahead of Saturday's home game against Marshall.
