BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (July 3, 2010) – The second day of preliminary matches has concluded for the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships at Barboursville City Park, Huntington YMCA Kennedy Center and Scott Orthopedics Soccer Complex in the Village of Barboursville, W. Va. Many teams have secured their spot in Monday's semifinals, but others have to prove themselves tomorrow for the chance to advance.
Delaware is second in the bracket going undefeated in pool play. Under-17 Girls Hockessin Academy Select's Allyson Zerhusen's two goals in the 38th and 43rd minutes were enough for the win over Maine Coast United Magic.
The Under-17 Girls Bethesda SC Dragons (MD) are at the top of their bracket after winning their second game against New York West's Syracuse Blitz Tsunami, 4-1. Bethesda went up by three early with goals in the 13th, 20th and 38th minutes by Kathryn Barth, Peyton Johnson and Katherine Sanquist. There was still plenty of time for Syracuse turn the tables and when Caitlin MacConnell scored a minute later it looked like the momentum had changed. Bethesda instead secured their win with their fourth goal by Jordan Savold ending the game, 4-1.
Scorpions Elite (MA) were Region I Champions in 2008 are second in their bracket just below Syosset Sting 92 Elite, the 2009 Champions. Today, the Under-17 Girls Scorpions' Melissa Gavin scored twice in the first half. Kicking off the second half, West Virginia's Kayla Rodriguez scored in the 52nd. Scorpions dominated the last quarter of the match scoring four additional goals for the 6-1 win over Charleston FC Elite.
Tomorrow, the Scorpions face off against Syosset Sting 92 Elite for the top spot in their bracket and a place in Monday's semifinals. Today, Syosset shutout Vermont's Far Post United. Alissa Bianculli and Christina Convey scored back-to-back goals in the 28th and 29th minutes. Syosset stayed on the offensive and put two more away before the end of the match for the 4-0 win.
Under-16 Boys Freedom United (MD) won their first match of the tournament over New Jersey's Marlboro Lightning, 2-1. The hard fought match kicked off with the first of two goals by Freedom United's Shane McCracken in the 15th. The Lightning tied the game in the 35th with a goal from Aaron Hart, but it wasn't enough. After the second half started McCracken scored his second for the Freedom's win, 2-1.
Kirkwood Ajax Premier (DE) and FSA United WHP (CT) battled for 80 minutes, but at the end the game remained scoreless. Both Under-16 teams are positioned with a win and a tie now going into tomorrow's final day of round robin play.
Winners of the Under-16 Boys Region I Premier League, the Penn Fusion Celtic (E-PA) are at the top of their bracket after winning their first match of the weekend. Yesterday their entire bracket's games ended in ties, so today and tomorrow are key for each team. Penn won 5-1 over the New Hampshire Classics. In the first half, Fusion went up by three with goals by Alexander Murphy, Nathan Doyle and Sasha Safavi. The Classic's goal came in the 15th from Evan Powlowsky. Fusion would score one more in the 55th for the 5-1 win.
The Penn Fusion Celtics face Massachusetts' FC Blazers tomorrow to earn a place in the semifinals. Today the Blazers went up by two in the first half with goals by Anderson Gaviria and Oliver White.
