(SISSONVILLE, WV) Day one of the 2012 West Virginia Open is officially in the books, where novice pro Christian Brand leads at 5-under-par. One stroke back sits host pro and 2005 Champion, Scott Depot’s Craig Berner, and 2011 WV Mid-Amateur Champion, Hurricane’s Sam O’Dell. One-hundred and twenty golfers brave the extreme heat today at Edgewood Country Club, with temperatures peaking into the mid-90s.

Six-time Champion, David Bradshaw sits tied at 11th place, along with Pikewood National pro, Morgantown’s Bob Friend. Friend lost in a playoff against Bradshaw at the 2011 WV Open at The Pines Country Club in Morgantown. In total, 11 golfers played under-par rounds today.

Edgewood’s par-4 9th hole was the most difficult of the day, at 462 yards and a 4.675 stroke average, while the par-5 fifth hole played the easiest, with a 4.9 stroke average.

Tomorrow is moving day, where the field will be cut to low 60 and ties following the second round. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. For more information on the West Virginia Open, including complete results, course statistics and more, visit www.wvga.org.
