Capital City Showdown: GW vs. Capital

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- We're just one day away from the big matchup between the Capital Cougars and the George Washington Patriots.

We'll start with the Cougars and their unenviable task of trying to slow down GW's star running back Ryan Switzer. Capital Coach Jon Carpenter isn't giving up any secrets before kickoff, but he does say he's extremely happy Switzer is a senior.

"I'm preparing to go buy him a graduation present," Coach Carpenter said. "I'll be tickled to death when he's gone. He's just a great player."

Carpenter [jokingly] hopes Switzer will not play to his fullest potential after hurting the Cougars for three years straight.

"He's had so many yards on us in the past, maybe he'll take it easy on us this week," Carpenter said.

On the other side, the GW Patriots look to keep their five-game winning streak going. But to do that, they'll have to go after Capital's plethora of playmakers. GW Coach Steve Edwards, Jr. knows his team can't take the Cougars' skill players lightly.

"I expect them to use their athletes," Edwards said. "They've got good speed. I look for them to try to use the option, and try to get on the edge on us. They have backs that can run. They've got a lot of good skilled athletes."

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 Friday at Laidley Field in Charleston. Fans attending the game will have a chance to grab one of our special WSAZ Charleston Football Friday Night T-Shirts. We'll be firing them into the stands via our T-Shirt Sling-Shot before kickoff.
