HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Hal Greer, one of the best players in NBA history, will return to his alma mater for the final game played at Veterans Memorial Field House on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.

“I am so excited to go back to Huntington,” said Greer of his hometown. “There are so many friends I hope to see and be a part of honoring the Field House. There are so many great memories there for me.”

After attending Douglass High School, Greer played for Marshall from 1955-58 as its first African-American scholarship student-athlete. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979 and still ranks among the all-time leaders in several statistical categories.

Inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982, Greer played 15 years in the NBA for the Syracuse Nationals and the Philadelphia 76ers. He was named to 10 consecutive all-star games and a seven-time All-NBA player.

“We are incredibly pleased to have Hal join us, along with close to 100 other former players,” said Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick. “Hal is one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players and his attendance will make that night one folks from around here will never forget.”

Greer is one of many Marshall greats scheduled to return to Huntington to honor the building that was erected in 1950 in honor of the city’s veterans. Sonny Allen, Jack Freeman, Russel Lee, Charlie Slack and Walt Walowac and nearly 100 others will all be in attendance on Feb. 10. They will also be on hand to witness the 2011-12 Marshall basketball team as it takes on East Carolina on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

The Field House Finale will include a Marshall alumni game, a salute to veterans, as well as a silent auction of items in the Field House. Tickets are $15 and can be ordered by calling the Marshall ticket office at 800-843-4373.
