HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall head coach Tom Herrion announced Thursday that DeAndre Kane, Nigel Spikes and Dennis Tinnon will serve as captains for the upcoming men’s basketball season.
“I think it’s important for this group to establish leadership and it’s already been established,” Herrion said at Marshall’s annual media day. “Those three were voted on by the players as our captains for the season. Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t add (Robert) Goff and Yous (Mbao). They’ve done a great job since last spring, especially in the summer workouts and this fall. Those guys have established a leadership role and it’s been evidence to us as a staff.”
Kane, a two-time member of the All-Conference USA team and a preseason first-team selection this season, averaged a team-high 16.5 points last season. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native scored a C-USA Tournament record 40 points in Marshall’s triple-overtime win over Tulsa and earned All-Conference USA Tournament Team honors. Kane enters the season as one of the nation’s top returning juniors with 1,073 career points in just two seasons.
Spikes, a senior center, averaged 4.1 points and 4.8 rebounds and played sparingly while recovering from a left knee injury last season. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native matched his career-high with 13 points at SMU as his playing time increased as the season progressed.
Tinnon, a senior forward, was one of just 21 players in the nation to average a double-double last season with 10.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. He was a member of the All-Conference USA Defensive Team last season as well as the C-USA All-Tournament Team after pulling down a tournament record 44 rebounds over four games. Tinnon, from Green Bay, Wisc., is the top returning rebounder in the conference.
The Marshall season officially gets underway with Thundering Herd Madness Friday at 8 p.m.
