HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee has selected the teams and individuals to participate in the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships and included in the list was Marshall senior Nathan Kerns.
Kerns, an Ironton, Ohio native, was one of 10 individuals selected to participate at the Ohio State University Golf Club (Scarlet Course) in Columbus, Ohio. Conference USA will be represented by Memphis, Houston, UAB, UCF, SMU, and Tulsa, but Kerns was the only individual selected amongst the remaining C-USA teams. The last time Marshall was represented by an individual golfer was Christian Brand in 2011.
The championship will be composed of six 54-hole regional tournaments from May 16-18. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each region will advance to the finals, which will take place at The Capital City Club in Atlanta, Ga. from May 28-June 2.
“I’m really happy for Nathan,” said head coach Matt Grobe of the all-conference golfer. “I am especially happy for him being able to play in his home state. Nathan, along with is mom, dad, and sister were in the office tonight during the selection and it was a really cool environment. They are all looking forward to seeing Nathan play more golf this year.”
Texas enters the tournament as the reigning 2012 champions, defeating Alabama 3-2 in the final round of match play competition. At the end of three rounds of stroke play, Illinois’ Thomas Pieters was crowned the individual champion after shooting a 5-under 208.
