HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - D.D. Scarver scored 20 points and Dennis Tinnon posted a double-double as Marshall took control in the final 3 minutes to defeat Coppin State 69-63 Saturday night in the first meeting between the schools.
The Thundering Herd (6-4), who fell behind by 12 in the first half, took their first lead briefly at 49-48 with 9:51 left. Coppin State (1-8) regained a six-point lead before Marshall pulled ahead at 58-57 following two 3-pointers by Scarver and a three-point play by Tinnon with 2:45 left.
Tinnon added a layup and DeAndre Kane a free throw, but Collin Johnson's layup with 1:18 left cut it to 61-59. Tinnon made another layup and Marshall sealed it with 6-of-6 free-throw shooting.
Tinnon had 15 points and 15 rebounds, Elijah Pittman 14 points, Kane 11 assists and Nigel Spikes 11 rebounds.
Michael Murray's 18 points led the Eagles, who made 2 of 10 free throws.
