HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Senior men’s golfer Nathan Kerns goes down in Thundering Herd history as the first Marshall men’s golfer to be selected to Conference USA’s All-Conference team after the league announced the postseason conference awards on Tuesday.
Kerns earned First Team All-C-USA after placing third at the C-USA Championships, while also conquering five top-three finishes this year and seven top-10 placements. He finished the season ranked as the No. 39 golfer by Golfstat.
“This award is a testament to how hard each and every guy works on the team,” Kerns said after hearing about the selection. “It’s a year-long award – it shows consistency. It also shows that when you are down, your teammates pick you up. This award is for the whole team. Every guy out there is pushing me to work harder. It’s a credit to them too.”
Kerns helped his team finish fifth in the league championship this season. The fifth place finish was Marshall’s best finish since joining C-USA. His third place individual placing in the championship is the highest finish of any Herd golfer in the conference tournament.
The Ironton, Ohio native will go down as one of the all-time great golfers in school history. His stroke average this season of 71.7 is a new Marshall record. His 74.14 career stroke average ranks second all time.
“We are really proud of Nathan,” head coach Matt Grobe said. “He has played really consistent all year. It’s really nice to see that he is rewarded with a first team All-Conference USA award. All five players on that list were very deserving. What Nathan has done all year with five top-three finishes and finishing third in the conference championships just shows you that he is a great player. Hopefully there is more golf for him yet to come.”
