HURRICANE, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Hurricane High School senior and volunteer firefighter, Joey “Chief Big Bear” Gowen, is certainly an involved young man around Hurricane.
As a spectator during Hurricane High School athletic events, you may come across an individual dressed, some what different than the rest of the crowd. Hurricane senior Joey Gowen is the team's first mascot in several years. He told us that made him even more excited about the position when he made his first appearance at a pep rally in the Fall.
‘I was very excited, I had an adrenaline rush going on, but it was kinda scary...finally got to be the mascot after many years of asking.
Chief Big Bear’s head dress, shirt, and pants are from the school. However, his necklace was a gift from one of his friends mother’s to give the outfit a little more ‘pop’. The spear was also a gift, given from the same person that does his make up.
When Joey is not on the sidelines, he switches from Chief Big Bear, to Chief of the future, as a volunteer firefighter for the city of Hurricane. That is one of the few reasons why he will miss a game, he has meetings with the department on Thursdays.
When asked how he thought the softball team would do, he told us simply, “I have faith in my girls.”
