CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- After a preseason coaches vote predicted the Mountaineers to finish last during their inaugural season in the Big XII, the Mountaineers are now tied for the the lead in the conference.
In just over two weeks the Mountaineers will travel to Oklahoma City to compete for a conference title. While 8 of 9 teams in the conference make this post season tournament, the fact that WVU will be competing rather than watching as the odd man out is a step above where they were projected.
These guys are looking for more now. The team has an overall record of 29-20 and a conference record of 11-7 thus far on the season. As a result, WVU will not be satisfied with simply making the tournament this year, they want to win it.
Should they win the tournament and secure an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament, it would be their first time in the national tournament since 1996 and just the 12th time in school history.
They will have an opportunity to make a case for themselves with two more series in the Big XII. Their first series comes in Charleston against TCU this weekend then they will finish up conference play when they travel to the home of another team tied for first, Oklahoma State.
Coming off of their series victory over 10 Oklahoma, the Mountaineers look for their next Big XII victory at 6:30 this Friday at Appalachian Power Park.
