CINCINNATI (AP) - Second baseman Brandon Phillips agreed to a new contract on Tuesday that will keep him with the Cincinnati Reds through the 2017 season.

Phillips was playing out the option year of his previous deal, getting $12 million. The club reworked the deal and added five years, giving itself another player under a long-term contract.

Last week, the Reds gave first baseman Joey Votto a new deal that added 10 years and $225 million, the biggest contract in franchise history. They also have right fielder Jay Bruce under contract through at least 2016 under a six-year, $51 million deal.

Phillips is a two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove player who batted .300 with 18 homers and 82 RBIs last season. He's Cincinnati's leadoff hitter this season.
