South Charleston's Freshman QB Leads Black Eagles to Big Win

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- In High school football, the common knowledge is that older, more experienced players are better at leading a team to success. However, South Charleston freshman Kentre Grier is anything but common.

The young gun led the Black Eagles to a huge 70-28 win over Nitro last Friday night. Grier had more than 500 total yards and eight touchdowns.

South Charleston Head Coach John Messinger says his freshman quarterback still has a lot to learn, but is off to a great start.

"He's done a great job for us," Coach Messinger said. "Our offensive coordinator has done a great job working with him, helping him understand our offense."

Coach Messinger admits Grier has made some mistakes, but says that should be expected with such a young player.

"I said it earlier in the season about Capital's quarterback (freshman Tyhree Pratt), and I'll say the same about ours," Coach Messinger said. "Sometimes when they're that young, they're too young and dumb to know they're not supposed to do what they're doing. But he does a great job and were awful proud of him."

South Charleston (5-3) will hit the road to face Ripley (3-5) this Friday.
