North Marion Remains Perfect; Defeats South Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Hailey Garrett scored 17 of her 23
points in the second half and North Marion nearly blew a 21-point
lead before holding on for a 71-62 win over South Charleston on
Saturday night for the Huskies' third straight Class AAA
championship.

Two-time state player of the year Mariah Byard added 19 points
and Courtney Swiger scored 15 for the top-seeded Huskies (25-0).

Brittany Gordon had 20 points for No. 2 South Charleston (25-2),
which lost in the title game for the second straight year.

Gordon brought the Black Eagles back from a 54-33 deficit late
in the third quarter. Her 3-pointer with 1:48 left in the game cut
the deficit to 63-62.

But South Charleston didn't score again and North Marion made 8
of 10 free throws after that to ice the title.

St. Joe Wins "A" Championship

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Freshman Mychal Johnson scored 23
points, Sara Sang added 21 and St. Joseph won its third straight
girls Class A championship with a 56-49 win over St. Marys on
Saturday.

Second-seeded St. Joseph (18-7) beat the top-seeded Lady Devils (26-1) in the finals for the second straight year.

St. Marys didn't have an answer after star Kelsea Fickiesen got
into early foul trouble. The Youngstown State recruit was held to
13 points. She had averaged 25 points and 12.5 steals in the first
two rounds. Teammates Audra Clark and Kendra Walker scored 12
apiece.

St. Marys came from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to cut
the deficit to 51-49 on a Walker jumper with a minute left, but
Johnson sealed the win by making four straight free throws in the
final 35 seconds.

Sang grabbed 13 rebounds and Johnson had 10.

Summers County Wins Fifth Straight "AA" Title

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Candace Brown had 27 points and 10
rebounds and helped fuel a key third-quarter run that propelled
Summers County to an 86-41 win over Scott on Saturday for the
Bobcats' record fifth straight girls Class AA championship.

Summers County broke the all-classes mark for consecutive titles
it shared with Class A Mercer Christian, which won four straight
from 1999-2002.

Top-seeded Summers County finished 28-0 for the third straight
season.

Leslie Mack added 21 points and Hanna Gunnoe scored 10 for
Summers County.

Makenzie White scored 32 points for third-seeded Scott (18-9),
but she had little help. Her teammates combined for just nine
points and Scott was outrebounded 51-43.

The 45-point margin was the most lopsided in Class AA
championship history.
