CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Cold, wet conditions didn't prevent
records from being set today at the state high school track
championships.
Buffalo's Seth Beckner broke his own state record in the
Single-A pole vault. His vault of 15 feet was the second-highest
ever at the state track meet. The all-classes record is 17 feet by
Parkersburg's Casey Freed in 1995.
Buckhannon-Upshur sensation Chelsea Carrier broke the Triple-A
record in a qualifying heat for the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of
14-point-66 seconds broke the mark of 14-point-72 set by
Parkersburg's Heather Skinner in 1992.
Carrier is going for four individual wins for the second
straight year and could set a record for the most career points at
the meet.
In the first running event of the day, Preston's girls set a
Class Triple-A record in the 32-hundred meter relay, breaking by
nearly a second the mark set by the school in 2005.
In the shuttle-hurdle relays, Winfield's girls broke the
Double-A record by two-tenths of a second and the South Harrison
boys broke the year-old Single-A mark by three-tenths of a second.
The meet is being held at Laidley Field in Charleston.
