CHARLESTON, W.Va. (March 27, 2012) - Morehead State’s Drew Williams hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Eagles to a 7-5 come-from -behind win over West Virginia in the Mountaineer Diamond Classic at Appalachian Power Park, tonight, in Charleston, W.Va., in front of 877 fans.

WVU went into the bottom of the seventh with a 5-3 lead, but the big inning hurt again as the Eagles scored four runs on four hits to take a 7-5 lead. Prior to Williams’ homer, Eric Bainer and Andrew Deeds each scored on a sacrifice fly and single, respectively.

The Mountaineers (11-16) finished with five runs on six hits and committed one error, while Morehead State (14-11) scored seven runs on nine hits and did not commit an error.

The loss went to WVU reliever Josh Harlow, who allowed five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings, while starter Caleb Ross took the no-decision, pitching three innings and allowing two runs on two hits. The left-hander struck out one and walked four.

Morehead State reliever Matt Robertson earned the win, pitching 2.1 innings with one hit allowed, while starter Garrick Whittle took the no-decision for Morehead State. Whittle pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with six walks. The save went to Matt Duncan who pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Jeff Birkofer and Chase Greenwell led the Eagles offense with two hits, and a combined two runs and two RBIs. Right fielder Brady Wilson, shortstop John Polonius and catcher Alan Filauro each had two hits, while left fielder Matt Frazer drove in a pair of runs for West Virginia.

WVU jumped out to 2-0 lead without recording a hit in the third inning. Third baseman Nate Antone drew a leadoff four-pitch walk. Antone advanced two bases after a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch, before Wilson drew a walk and stole second. Center fielder Bobby Boyd came to the plate and laid down a bunt that the pitcher fielded and attempted to get Antone charging for home, but was unable to reach the plate, allow all the runners to be safe. Wilson scored in the next at bat as Frazer hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Morehead State scored two in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2, and then took the 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth as Cole Cleveland doubled down the left field line to score Deeds from second base.

The Mountaineers recorded their first hit in the fourth inning as Polonius doubled off the right center field wall, but the WVU hitters were unable to drive him home.

Behind Frazer’s bases loaded sacrifice fly to center field, WVU tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning, scoring Filauro. Unfortunately, WVU unable to do any more damage during the inning.

WVU loaded the bases again in the sixth inning and was scored two runs to take the 5-3 lead. Antone scored on a Filauro single to left center field, and Filauro scored on a dropped third strike to Frazer with the bases loaded.

The Mountaineers resume BIG EAST play and travel to St. John’s on Friday, March 30, for a three-game series. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
