Michael is our weekend anchor of the MyZ 10 O'Clock News in addition to being a reporter during the week.
He began at WSAZ-TV as an intern more than 5 years ago, but he was quickly promoted to a part-time and eventually full-time position. Although he started behind the scenes as a producer, Michael moved in front of the camera as an anchor and reporter. A native of Bald Knob, W.Va., a small town in Boone County, Michael graduated as valedictorian of his small class at Van High School. He received the prestigious Yeager Scholarship from Marshall University, where he majored in broadcast journalism and minored in Spanish and Political Science.
Michael placed nationally in the Hearst Broadcast News Competition, he received the Dustin Opell Reporter of the Year Award his junior year, and just before graduation he earned the Marvin Stone Award, which is the highest honor in Marshall's School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Michael also studied at Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid, Spain and at Oxford University in England. Michael enjoys politics and has extensively covered the 2008 presidential primaries in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.
He lives in Huntington with his dog Maggie and his cat Oliver. If you know of anything exciting or newsworthy, feel free to e-mail Michael the tip at michael.wooten@wsaz.com or call 304-690-3060.
