UPDATE 9/24/10 @ 4:30 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported Friday that a nationwide recall of certain Similac-brand powder infant formulas impacted WIC customers locally.

According to the press release, Similac is the main baby formula offered to babies in West Virginia’s Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition program. The program reaches about half of all babies born in the state.

Department officials in the WIC Program received additional information concerning the formulas that are affected in the voluntary recall of Similac Formulas. The products impacting WIC participants have the letters “RB” in the lot number, but only the following specific formulas are impacted by the recall:

  • Similac Advance 12.4 oz
  • Similac Advance EarlyShield 12.9 oz
  • Similac Isomil Advance 12.9 oz

All other formulas are not affected by the recall for WIC customers. If WIC participants currently have one of the above formulas, not listing “RB” in the lot number, that formula is not affected by the recall.

To help WIC participants during this situation, the WV WIC program is temporarily allowing participants to exchange the recalled formula at the grocery store. The exchange may be for Similac powdered formula not affected by the recall, or Concentrate or Ready-To-Feed Similac contract brands at an equivalent amount of returned formula.

WIC participants may also choose to contact their local WIC office for an exchange of formula on the next regularly scheduled clinic day.

Similac maker Abbott Nutrition issued the voluntary recall after quality inspections revealed that some 1-2 percent of product made 6 months ago had been contaminated with parts of a small, common beetle.

Parents may call 800-986-8850, or visit for more information about recalled products.

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the formula containing this beetle poses no immediate serious health risk. The FDA reports babies who consume the beetle parts may develop gastrointestinal discomfort, which could discourage them from wanting to eat. Parents are advised to have their babies evaluated by a health care provider should symptoms occur.

    ORIGINAL STORY 9/23/10
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A recall has been announced and if you're a new parent, it may be on a product that's sitting on your shelf.

Abbott Laboratories says it's voluntarily recalling 5 million containers of Similac infant formula because it may be contaminated with insect parts.

The recall only affects powder formulas, not the liquid variety.

The company says the insect parts could cause stomach ache or digestion problems, although there have been no reports of illness.

If you have questions about products you may already own, you should contact Similac directly at phone 800-986-8850.
