CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- More than 5,000 West Virginians who lost their homes to foreclosure may be eligible for payments under a national settlement between lenders and states.

Attorney General Darrell McGraw said Wednesday that 5,222 borrowers in the state will receive claim forms.

The settlement includes $3.6 million in payments to residents who lost homes to foreclosure between Jan. 1, 2008, and Dec. 31, 2011, and whose loans were serviced by one of the lenders involved in the agreement.

McGraw says borrowers who participate in the settlement retain their right to file a lawsuit or pursue other legal remedies.

The deadline for submitted the claim forms is Jan. 18, 2013.
