SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The pain at the pump isn't so painful these days for folks in one part of our region. In fact, getting gas is actually fun.
It's not often that you see one person after another smiling at the gas pump. But, we found a lot of folks downright giddy Friday as they reaped the rewards of a gas war.
“It's wonderful at Christmas time,” said a motorist.
It's in the true Christmas spirit that folks happily -- yes, happily fill their tanks with gas. It's hard not be jolly these days when you're filling up at $2.93 a gallon. Depending on where you're filling up in the area, that's a 30 to 40-cent savings per gallon.
“That’s a good deal,” Greg Agee said.
It was a really good deal for Agee, who was getting 27 gallons of gas.
“That's a good tank of gas," he said. "Eighty-one dollars, and normally (it) is up over $100. So, savings of about $20.”
Murphy Express just opened in South Point, Ohio. They've been steadily dropping the price for days. So, it's easy to understand why folks are driving in from near and far to get in line and wait for gas.
“I drove all the way here from Ashland because I have friends on Facebook who said gas is $2.93 in South Point, and I said that's worth the 15-minute drive,” Suzanne Barker said.
And so Barker made the trek for a price break on gas.
“I'm getting ready to go Christmas shopping, and I'd rather spend the money on my kids than on gas,” Barker said.
“It’s worth the wait," Jackie Milam said. "I’d probably wait about 30 minutes for gas at this price."
But, Murphy's marketing strategy is triggering a chain reaction. One gas station after another along U.S. 52 -- four others total -- have also dropped their prices for an all-out war.
“I’ll save about $20," Samantha Wilson said. "My boys will get Happy Meals today."
We wanted to know how long this gas price break would last. We called Murphy Express corporate headquarters and left a message. No one returned our call.
However, we did check the company website where we found this is how they operate -- with low overhead so they can offer low prices.
