Taylor Books, 226 Capitol Street, Charleston, WV
Lemonade Stories screening at Taylor Books

Lemonade Stories, Inspiring Entrepreneurs and the Mothers Who Made Them, is a documentary film by award-winning filmmaker, Mary Mazzio, profiling extraordinary entrepreneurs and their mothers. Taylor Books will host a screening in the Annex Art Gallery on October 21 at 6 p.m. The screening is sponsored by Charleston Montessori School and Lemonade Day West Virginia, and is the official kick off for the state's Lemonade Day 2015.

Lemonade Stories, produced in collaboration with Babson College and Scott Timmins, focuses on how mothers have contributed to the entrepreneurial spirit of their sons and daughters. The film, which garnered the First Place Judge's Commendation for BEST DOCUMENTARY at the Rhode Island International Film Festival (one of the few festivals which qualifies films for the Academy Award), also aired nationwide on CNNfn and has been broadcast nationwide in the UK, Israel, the Middle East, Latin America, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. The debut of the film's panel discussion aired nationwide on C-SPAN.

The documentary run time is 49 minutes. Content is appropriate for children of middle school age or older.

St. Joseph's Charity Choice 5K

Date(s): 10/18/2014

1326 6th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701
St. Joseph Catholic School and St. Joseph Central Catholic High School have joined hands together with Tyson’s Fight for a Cure – Pulmonary RRP, to host the 4th Annual 5K Race. Don’t forget that this year’s race is Saturday, October 18th, beginning at 8:30am. The event brings together the Tri-State community in a fun and safe environment in downtown Huntington. We encourage children of all ages to race with us.

This year’s benefactor, “Tyson’s Fight for a Cure,” is for Tyson, a 7th Grade Student at St. Joseph Catholic School. Tyson has been battling RRP since he was a baby. The disease has travelled into his lungs and unless a cure is found, the disease will completely destroy Tyson’s lungs. The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, under the research of Dr. Wells, will do a RRP study using growths from Tyson’s lungs to find a drug that will hopefully cure the disease.

We encourage everyone to participate in this year’s event as a runner or walker, a sponsor or a volunteer.

If you have any questions, please contact Carol Gale at cgale@stjosephgs.org or Belinda Chapman at bchapman@stjosephhs.org.

Caregivers Care Fair

Date(s): 10/19/2014

Temple Israel, 2312 Kanawha Blvd. E., Charleston, WV, 25311
Temple Israel's Social Action Committee is spearheading a "Caregivers Care Fair," to be held from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 19 at Temple Israel, 2312 Kanawha Blvd. E.

Many residents of the Kanawha Valley are thrust into being a “caregiver,” whether for a spouse, a parent, or a child. Often, it is difficult to find resources to help in the journey of medical, psychological, emotional, financial, and other demands. The Fair aims to aid in the process. It is free and open to the public.

Speakers for the event include
·  Marsha Meeks, WV S.H.I.P. (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) Director, talking about Medicare counseling and enrollment, and sharing info about her office’s programs, including health insurance products and in-home healthcare;
·   Jennifer Taylor, Ombudsman Attorney at Legal Aid of West Virginia, tackling estate planning, medical and financial powers of attorney, and living wills; and
·   Dr. Todd Goldberg, MD, gerontologist and Program Director for Geriatric Fellowship, WVU-Charleston, addressing issues of aging, including signs of the onset of dementia.

There are 20 – and counting – vendors who are participating in the Fair, including the Veteran's Administration, Right at Home, Senior Services, St. Francis Hospital, University of Charleston, Faith in Action of the Kanawha Valley, Relatives as Parents, and a host of others.

There will be a blood pressure screening and opportunities to speak to massage therapists, a nutritionist, a palliative care representative, and more.
Come to the Fair!

Bike and Walk MS Country Roads Ride

Date(s): 8/30/2014, 8/31/2014

The Greenbrier White Sulphur Springs, WV
2014 welcomes the 24th annual Bike MS: Country Roads Ride on August 30-31, 2014. Our annual destination ride hopes to attract over 300 cyclists raising over $200,000 to help create a world free of multiple sclerosis. The two -day cycling adventure offers three route options: a 120 mile road route, a 150 mile road route, and a 120 mile Trail Trek along the entire length of the Greenbrier River Trail. The Country Roads Ride takes cyclists through the scenic area of Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties in southern West Virginia. Sneaking a peak at Senator Rockefeller’s country side home and riding right through Greenbank Observatory, our road cyclists take in some of West Virginia’s most beautiful territory. The Greenbrier River Trail has been called West Virginia’s premier rail to trail conversion and the miles just fly by when you are immersed in nature as only the Greenbrier River Trail can bring it to you. New this year CRR trail riders will experience every inch of the 77 mile abandoned grade. Our Bike MS event begins at the Historic Greenbrier Resort, a national historic landmark, with classic architecture, exquisite interior design, carefully sculpted landscape, impeccable service and outstanding amenities. Cyclists then pedal to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, located at the foot of Snowshoe Mountain in the heart of Pocahontas County, West Virginia, one of the highest elevated counties in the East and set in the middle of the Monongahela National Forest. Cyclists enjoy a celebration dinner with breathtaking views and an overnight stay then return the next day to the finish line on The Greenbrier’s North Lawn for a celebration picnic provided by The Greenbrier. Unlike racing events, this event is designed to provide a scenic, challenging route for both the experienced cyclist and the energetic novice.
