HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Keeping up with the latest trends in TV technology can be quite a task. But there is a new format that is making headlines across the country. The newest HDTV craze: 3D TV.
The technology was on display in our region this past weekend, and folks like Rick Ennis were very impressed.
"I think the movies are in trouble," Ennis said.
According to HD expert Chris Christian, the technology is gaining momentum in the industry.
"3D is kind of the latest buzz," Christian said.
Christian travels all over showing off new TV technologies for Mitsubishi Electronics of America. His 3D display at Big Sandy Superstores got quite a crowd of interested customers.
"I think its great,” Ennis said. “I think its something that I’m interested in, and probably would buy it."
Just like 3D movies or books, you first have to wear special 3D glasses, and while we can’t show you the effect online, Christian says it’s the real deal.
"Not only do you see the depth of the picture, but it also comes out at you.” Christian said. “You really feel like you can reach out and touch the animated objects."
The number one question from folks checking out the 3D display: when can I get it?
"That’s the million dollar question right now,” Christian said. “There are some capabilities of getting 3D inside the home right now, primarily in the gaming part of the industry. It's a little bit expensive.”

What is never discussed when talking about 3-D television is that the viewer must have near perfect, stereo vision in order for the 3-D effect work. Otherwise its worse than viewing regular television.
