HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- When it comes to HDTV's, more and more people are opting for the new look by hanging their TV on their wall.

"Everyone wants a flat screen on their wall," Mark Wilks said. "That's what everyone has waited for for years, and finally the price has come down to where everyone can afford one."

Wilks sells and installs TVs at his shop in Huntington. He says a lot of his customers try to set up their new TVs themselves, and that's where the problems usually begin.

"A lot of people are not familiar with HDMI cables and all that stuff," Wilks said. "People get over their heads some time."

In fact, a new study shows a lot of you are getting in over your head when it comes to wiring your wall-mounted HDTV.

A large number of folks are simply cutting a hole and dumping the wires behind the wall, just to get everything out of the way. Other folks are using multiple extension cords to connect all the way to the nearest outlet. It's a move Mark says is not only the wrong route, it's downright dangerous.

"There is a right way and there is a wrong way," Wilks said. "And people need to understand that. Of course, the right way is to get with your local electrician have him install it right behind your TV."

Missing the point hit it on the head. A note for computer users as well, the proper way is to have a surge protector not one of those extension cords from walmart and then a battery backup and then you computer not the battery backup then surge protector. If you insurance finds the fault of a fire as a battery backup plugged directly into the wall they will not cover it either.

WSAZ botched the angle; the real issue is that improper wiring inside your wall can void your homeowner insurance. If your TV is the source of a fire, you are not protected.
